21 Club Never Goes Out of Style

Frequent raids during the Prohibition-era couldn’t shutter Jack and Charlie’s 21, and decades later the boldface speakeasy, now dubbed the ‘21′ Club, continues to make a name for itself.

With its trademark rum and mint cocktails, famed ‘21′ burger (which, according to NYMag, “were Harvard-tuition expensive long before Daniel Boulud got into the act”)and ultra private wine cellar, the restaurant is home to dozen of celebrities and political influentials, many of whom have favorite tables.

For a taste of an era nearly forgotten, this classic cocktail lounge and restaurant is the perfect choice for any glamorous occasion. As one dinner put it, “It’s an oldie, but a most certainly, and hopefully forever, a goodie.”

Tori Spelling made an appearance on The View to talk about her reality TV show ‘Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood,’ her upcoming book ‘Mommywood’, and the the spinoff of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210′ while co-host Sherri Shepherd indulged herself in bizarre spa treatments involving nightingale droppings, chocolate, beer & eggs, and small fish.

Across town 80’s pop star Rick Springfield sent women into overdrive when he took time to sign copies of

his latest CD, ‘Venus In Overdrive’. The former soap actor then ducked into a taping of ‘Live with Regis and Kelly’ to perform ‘What’s Victoria’s Secret?’

The unstoppable Kelly Ripa dashed from Springfield’s performance to catch a ride in Central Park’s new Aeroballoon, then dashed back to interview Tim Gunn about the new season of ‘Project Runway’

Hip-hop stars Chris Brown (sans Rihanna) and Ne-Yo were both seen bopping around midtown with body guards and entourages.

Sex in the City superstar Chris Noth spent the afternoon filming an episode of ‘Law & Order : Criminal Intent’ in East Village.

Up in Harlem crowds gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Barbara Ann Teer at her memorial service at The Riverside Church.

Post-dinner time, Whoopi Goldberg wowed theatre fans with her first night performance in the Broadway musical ‘Xanadu’ at the Helen Hayes Theatre, while the debut of the remade Wrigley’s Gum jingle at the Nokia Theatre drew crowds and camera.

Finally, Kevin Costner (accompanied by his daughter Lily) signed autographs outside Ed Sullivan Theatre before heading inside to David Letterman’s ‘Late Show’ to discuss his love for spear fishing, the great outdoors, and his new movie ‘Swing Vote.’

For a team that started off slow, the Mets’ winning streak just gets sweeter. Sports Business Daily reports the team’s first-place status is boosting ticket sales and game attendance. Crowd numbers during this months six-game home stand versus the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies averaged more than 50,000. It was the highest attendance ever for three game sets with both those clubs. The Mets now have a chance to draw 4 million fans for the first time ever!

One Luxury Suite Left to Buy at New Mets Stadium

Talk about sizzlin’ sales!  Crains New York is reporting all but one of the 49 suites at the Mets’ new CitiField ballpark have been sold.

“We’ve done very well, which might suggest we priced the suites low,” Mets executive vice president Dave Howard told the trade. “But we felt they were priced fairly. They are tremendous quality in terms of fit out, size and sight lines.”

The suites, which range in price from $250,000 to $500,000, are all within the infield — including a few “Sterling Suites” just two rows from the field. While some fans have complained about the steep price tag, officials point out the suites are a bargain compared with those at the new Yankee Stadium (which may cost more than $850,000).

And, as Mr. Howard pointed out, there are plenty of options for folks on a budget. Over 50% of the 42,500 seats in the new stadium will cost between $5 and $50.

“The [cheaper] seats will be great seats,” Howard assured. “Everything is lower and closer. The seats are wider, with more leg room.”

We can’t wait!

M&M’s is learning that it shouldn’t mess with the “Naked Cowboy.” Robert Burck, the man in the tighty-whities — and not much else — playing his guitar in Time Square is the naked truth behind the $4-million lawsuit he’s filed against Mars, the maker of M&M’s, along with the advertising agency that (un)dressed up a morsel of candy in Naked Cowboy gear for a commercial. At the end of June a judge decided to let the case proceed.

On a gorgeous summer afternoon, it’s easy to see why Coney Island is known as “America’s Playground.” But when temperatures drop, the sun sets early and the flood of tourists will reduce to a trickle can it still hold the same name?

Absolutely, says NY city council member Domenic Recchia.

The spirit of Coney Island can stay alive post summer, with the energy and opportunities generated during the summer living on.

“My dream is Coney Island as a year-round destination. That’s within our grasp, but we won’t get there unless we come together,” he says.

20-year-old southern belle Bailey Hanks had never seen a Broadway show, but in just a few months she’ll be a leading lady in the stage musical Legally Blonde at the Palace Theater.

Hanks was revealed as the winner of MTV’s reality show The Search for Elle Woods on July 21, and her version of Elle’s first-act anthem, “So Much Better,” debuted in an exclusive Broadway.com video on July 21. The single made the Top 100 iTunes chart the day after it was released.

“It’s so great to be Elle Woods,” Hanks told the Canadian Press at a private party room at the legendary restaurant Sardi’s. “It’s not a stretch for me. It’s just like second nature.”

Hand-picked by director Jerry Mitchell out of a group of 10 aspiring Elles, Hanks certainly looks the party of the blonde sorority girl.  Her long blond hair and sunny disposition made her the obvious choice to replace Tony-nominated Laura Bell Bundy.

“I am more excited than nervous,” she said. “Nerves usually don’t hit me until the moment I get into place to get on stage. And it’s that butterfly feeling where I’m so excited, I can’t wait. It’s an exciting nervous. It’s not like, ‘Omigod, I don’t want to do this!’ I feel so at home when I’m on stage.”

Youth Theater Offers NYC Kids Lifetime Opportunity

By Matthew Shaer | The Christian Science Monitor

ost mornings, Taylor Hogan, a 15-year-old with a singing voice three times her size, wakes up at 5 a.m., and is out the door by 6. (Breakfast? Well, maybe not.) During the school year, when the academic grind gets especially intense, she does half her homework in the evenings, and the other half during lunch, before afternoon classes begin.

But Taylor, who lives in what she calls “a very, very remote part of Queens,” in New York City, saves most of her energy for a dimly lit stage on the second floor of an office building in bustling midtown Manhattan. The performance pace – some 10 shows a week, double that on the weekends – is in many ways soothing, she says.

“We’re kids, just like you. And we’re doing what we want,” she says with a smile. “I want people in the audience to relate to that. I want them to say, ‘I can be that kid.’ ”

In this case, “doing what we want” involves a frenetic one-hour montage of singing and dancing called “Everything About a Day (Almost),” which is now in its second week of performances at the TADA! Youth Theater (www.tadatheater.com).

Founded in 1984 by Janine Nina Trevens – now the organization’s executive and artistic director – “TADA!” describes itself, in part, as a “theatrical training ground.” And for up-and-comers like Taylor, who live and breathe theater, the steady roster of classes and shows is an invaluable outlet.

It’s also, Ms. Trevens explains, a stage program uniquely tailored to reach a broad cross section of the greater New York population.

According to figures provided by TADA!, more than 1,000 children between the ages of 8 and 18 – hailing from all five boroughs and a variety of ethnic backgrounds – have performed in the TADA! Ensemble.
